…but blogger Amanda Marcotte isn’t buying it.

Regarding an alleged rape at Duke University of a black stripper by white lacrosse players, conservative columnist David Brooks writes:

Several decades ago, American commentators would have used an entirely different vocabulary [than race and class] to grapple with what happened at Duke. Instead of the vocabulary of sociology, they would have used the language of morality and character.

Amanda Marcotte of Pandagon responds:

David Brooks is either stupid or lying, and probably both. Let’s be frank–back in the day, there wouldn’t be articles about the immorality of white guys gang-raping a black woman. Back in the day, this crime wouldn’t have made it into the headlines or the police docket. It would have been ignored.

Back in the day, this wouldn’t have made the news until someone had been arrested and charged with a crime. Then, there would be the presumption of innocense until proven guilty. Today, we assume guilt, prosecute in the press and convict by public indignation. Gee I miss the good ole days!

Actually, Amanda has it right. “Back in the day”, it wouldn’t even had been considered a crime. It wouldn’t have been reported, and if it was, the police wouldn’t have done anything about it because of the circumstances surrounding it. And even if it did, it would have been quickly hushed up becase “it would look bad for Duke!”
