A BBC panel has ruled that the airing of the operatic melodrama “Jerry Springer, The Opera” was not indecent. The broadcast recieved over 60,000 complaints from religious groups and “decency” campaigners. (Of those, 55,000 complaints were received by the BBC before the show was aired.)

The “outstanding artistic significance of the program,” the BBC concluded, ” outweighed the offense which it caused to some viewers.”
