“Bat Boy” Bumped for “Godspell”
An Indiana High School dumped its production of “Bat Boy, the Musical”, which tells the story of the flying-mammal- cum-lonely-boy initially made (in)famous by the Weekly World News.
After the play had been cast and the production scheduled, Homestead High School Principal Dianne Moake decided the play’s tale of tolerance for people’s differences was a bit too racy.
Searching for a replacement script, producers suggested “Urinetown.” (Nixed.) A movement was spearheaded for “Little Shop of Horrors.” (Almost produced, then nixed.)
Running out of options, the high school settled on that glorious old standby, “Godspell.”
Story’s in the Ft. Wayne Journal Gazette.
